A short history of GI Norden

Nordisk forening for geografisk informasjon (acronym GI Norden) or “Nordic Association for Geographic Information”, was founded in 1989 as a regional organisation of AM/FM-GIS International, which was founded in 1979 in Colorado, USA.

Since 1985, annual European conferences had been held and during some years a number of regional conferences had been arranged.

28. November - 1. December 1989, the first Nordic AM/FM conference was held at Beitostølen in Norway. In conjunction with this, AM/FM International, European Division, Nordic Region (abbreviated AM/FM-GIS Nordic Region) was established. At the same time, a board was formed in which AM/FM users in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden was represented.

In 1998 AM/FM-GIS Nordic Region changed name to GI Norden. From autumn 2004 GI Norden is reorganised and based on the membership of national GI associations, represented by one main organisation from each country in the Nordic region.

The members are Geoforum Danmark (Denmark), ProGIS (Finland), LISA (Iceland), GeoForum (Norway), and ULI (Sweden). Both the board and the annual meeting (general assembly) now consist of two representatives from each of the five countries, appointed by the mentioned organisations.

The Faeroe Islands, Greenland and The Aaland Islands have the status as observers.
