The main activities of GI Norden
The main activity is the arrangement of a yearly GIS conference for professionals on an ambulant basis, with five years cycles between the Nordic countries.
In 2005 the 17. conference was held in Reykjavik, Iceland 14. - 17. September.
In 2006 the 18. conference was held in Helsinki, Finland 2. - 4. October.
In 2007 the 19. conference will be held in Herning, Denmark 1. - 3. October.
In 2008 the 20. conference will be held in Fredrikstad, Norway 15. - 17. October.
The GI Norden has decided to form a working group to follow up the
INSPIRE working program and the work carried out by the drafting teams.
The first working group meeting was held on Iceland in 2005 during
the congress period mentioned above.
The GI Norden is partly financing and fully supporting a Nordic working group on international standardisation. The working group is representing the national bodies of standardisation with the task of co-ordinating and preparing the Nordic views on new standards in different stages of the hearing process of CEN and ISO standardisation.
In order to extend the knowledge and usefulness of geographic information to the public, professionals and the society, GI Norden is co-operating with different organisations when it comes to arranging courses and seminars on topics within the GI Norden’s framework of activities. This program is special active in Sweden.
GI Norden aims, both financially and technical, to initiate projects within the GI Norden’s framework of activities to stimulate the progress of technical skills on production of spatial information, effectiveness of public sector and benefits for the market demands. At the moment two projects are accepted by the GI Norden board. The first one is to establish a Nordic grid-net for statistical purposes and the other one to publish a handbook showing responsibility for legislation, management of the laws by the administration, the public responsibility to following up and description of the technical process with use of public information and reporting of information.
The GI Norden vision is to get geographic information accepted and treated as part of the public infrastructure world-wide. These aims will be achieved by fulfilment of the activities within the organisation’s framework and by highlighting the issues through founding and awarding a "Prize of Honour" for having carried outstanding company or personal skill in developing or promoting geographic information.
