Nordic meeting on GI standardisation
Representatives from the nordic countries met in Oslo 3.-4. May 2006 to discuss the status and plans of standardisation.

The board meeting and annual meeting of GI Norden was held at Hotel Haikko in Finland Friday 19. and Saturday 20. May 2006. Henning Sten Hansen, Geoforum Danmark, was re-elected as president of GI Norden.

The Nordic GIS Conference was arranged by GI Norden and ProGIS.
GI Norden Award of Honour
The board of GI Norden has decided to establish an Award of Honour, as a reward for initiatives or results within the field of geographic information. The Award of Honour will be presented for the first time at the Nordic GIS Conference in Helsinki 2.-4. October 2006.

ULI (Utvecklingsrådet för Landskapsinformation) arranged the conference GeoInfo 2006, 23.-25. October at Växjö Concert House, together with SydostGIS.
GI Norden Award of Honour given to Olaf Østensen
GI Norden has decided to give an award for remarkable initiatives and results within the field of Geographic Information. During the Nordic GIS Conference in Helsinki 2.-4. October, the award was given to Olaf Østensen, Norwegian Mapping and Cadastre Authority. The award was presented by GI Norden's president Henning Sten Hansen.
Danske Kortdage 2006
Geoforum Danmark arranged the conference "Kortdage 2006", 6.-8. November 2006 at Herning Kongres Center.
The 18th Nordic GIS Conference in Helsinki, 2.-4. October 2006
The 18th Nordic GIS Conference in Helsinki was arranged by ProGIS and GI Norden. The conference had 119 participants, most of course from Finland.
ULI is looking for new head of the secretariat
The head of the secretariat of ULI, Ewa Rannestig, has got a new job in the Swedish Lantmäteriet. She will now be head of the secretariat working with questions concerning the National Advisory Board on Geographic Information, INSPIRE, and the national Geodata Strategy, in the The Land and Geographic Information Division. ULI is now looking for a new head of the secretariat.
Agreement on the INSPIRE Directive
The European Parliament and Council reached agreement 21. November on the contents of the proposed INSPIRE Directive, which aims to harmonise spatial information across Europe.

The 19th Nordic GIS Conference 2007 in Herning, Denmark
The 19th Nordic GIS Conference was succesfully arranged in Herning in Denmark 1.-3. October 2008. The conference was a part of the Danish "Kortdage" and was arranged by Geoforum Danmark in cooperation with GI Norden. There were about 475 participants, most of them from Denmark.
GI Norden Award of Honour given to Bengt Rystedt
GI Norden has for the second time given an award for remarkable initiatives and results within the field of Geographic Information. During ULI's Conference GeoInfo 2007 in Gävle 17.-19. October, the award was given to Bengt Rystedt, former president of the International Cartographic Association (ICA).
National Conferences in Norway and Sweden
GeoForum in Norway will arrange GeoForum 2008 in Bodø 5.-7. March, and Kartografiska Sällskapet in Sweden will arrange Kartdagar 2008 in Jönköping, 16.-18. April.
Lennart Olsson has passed away
Lennart Olsson, one of the founders and the first president of GI Norden, has passed away, 78 years old. He was a former honorary member of GI Norden.
Henning Sten Hansen elected member of EUROGI's Executive Committee
In the EUROGI meeting in Brussels 28th March, Henning Sten Hansen (Geoforum Danmark) was elected member of EUROGI's Executive Committee, as a representative of GI Norden.
New EUROGI Policy Statement
"Creating a powerful synergy in the interest of good governance". A draft EUROGI policy statment supporting the exploitation of synergies between GI-SDI and E-Government for the benefit of good governace was adopted by the Executive Committee at its meeting held in Rome on February 1-2, 2008. A draft declaration has been agreed and possibly other documents will be made available in the near future.
Annual meeting of GI Norden
The next annual meeting of GI Norden will be held in Torshavn, Faeroe Islands, on May 23 2008.
New head of secretariat in Geoforum Danmark
Jesper Skovdal Christiansen has been appointed as new head of secretariat in Geoforum Danmark. He will start in his new job June 1 2008. The former head, Jacob Gadd, left his position in february. In the mean time Vagn W. Laursen has been acting head of secretariat.
The 20th Nordic GIS Conference 2008 - in Fredrikstad, Norway
The invitation, programme and registration for the 20th Nordic GIS Conference in Fredrikstad 15th-17th October is now available. The deadline for registration is set to 15th September.

At the 20th Nordic GIS Conference in Fredrikstad 15th-17th October, Jan Terje Bjørke from Norway got the Award of honour 2008 from GI Norden.
ULI looking for substitute for head of secretariat
ULI's head of secretariat, Johanna Runarson, will have a maternity leave from 1st April 2009. The organisation is looking for a substitute in this position for one year.
Nordic GIS Conference in Stockholm
The 21st Nordic GIS Conference 2009 will be arranged 24th-25th September in Stockholm. The conference is a meeting place for people interested in geographic information technology.
EUROGI opens for all GI Organisations
EUROGI has decided to let all types of European GI Organisations become member.

Nordic Course in Cartography 2009
GI Norden are running a Nordic Course in Cartography in Norway, in cooperation with the Norwegian Mapping and Cadastre Authority and GeoForum. The course will be held in Stavanger 31st August - 3rd September 2009. The course has now got 43 registered partcipants.
Þorbjörg Kr. Kjartansdottir new president of GI Norden
Þorbjörg Kr. Kjartansdottir from Iceland was elected new president of GI Norden at the annual meeting at Sollentuna in Sweden 27th May 2009. Paula Ahonen-Rainio has been president for the last two years and left the board. Þorbjörg Kr. Kjartansdottir has been vice-president for the last four years.
Nordic Address Forum 2009 in Iceland
The Nordic Address Forum was arranged at Hotel Reynihlíð, Mývatn, on 10th - 11th June 2009.
ScanGIS 2009 is cancelled
ScanGIS 2009 is cancelled due to lack of papers. The plan was to arrange ScanGIS parallel to the GI Norden Conference. With only 4 papers and 4 extended abstracts left it's not possible to arrange ScanGIS 2009.
Henning Sten Hansen - a GIS pioneer
ESRI has appointed Henning Sten Hansen, Denmark's First Professor in Geoinformatics, as a GIS pioneer.

The Nordic GIS Conference will be arranged by ULI, in cooperation with GI Norden, 24th-25th September 2009. The conference is an event for people with interests in the growing field of geographic information (GI) and GI technology.

At the 21st Nordic GIS Conference in Stockholm 24th-25th September, GI Norden's president Þorbjörg Kr. Kjartansdottir announced that the Award of honour will be given to FIG’s president Stig Enemark from Denmark.

GeoForum in Norway searching for new head of secretariat
Karsten Lien, head of the secretariat of GeoForum in Norway, will leave his position next spring. He has been offered a new position as adviser in the secretariat of "Norge digitalt" (Norway digital) in the Norwegian Mapping Authority. The head of secretariat of GeoForum is also the head of secretariat of GI Norden.
GI Norden's Award of honour to Stig Enemark
At "Kortdage 2009" in Kolding 18th-20th November, GI Norden's board members Henning Sten Hansen and Karsten Lien gave the Award of honour to FIG’s president Stig Enemark from Denmark.
The Nordic countries got two SDI Awards
The Nordic countries got two out of ten SDI Awards at the SDInet+/EUROGI meeting in Torino 26th-27th November. The two awards were Norway Digital, and PlanDK from Denmark.
New general manager of GeoForum in Norway
The board of GeoForum has appointed Marianne Meinich as new general manager (head of secretariat) of GeoForum. She will start in her new job in the spring this year. The acting general manager, Karsten Lien, will leave his position and start working at the Norwegian Mapping Authority.
GI Norden Workshop and Summer school 2010
The GI Norden workshop including the GI Norden summer school will be held in Selfoss, Iceland 14th-16th June 2010. This is the 22nd Nordic GIS Conference. Please note that early registration with reduced prices is extended to 20th of April.
Nordic Workshop on GIS and Health
GI Norden and Geoforum Denmark presented 13th-14th September 2010 the first Nordic Workshop to explore the many uses of GIS for public health access, processes, and decision-making.

At the GI Norden Workshop in Selfoss, Iceland in June, GI Norden's president Þorbjörg Kr. Kjartansdottir announced that the GI Norden Award of honour for 2010 will be given to Kirsi Virrantaus, Professor in geoinformatics and cartography at Aalto University in Finland.

Nordic agreement on exchange of cross-border data for crisis management
During the meeting between the Nordic Mapping Agencies in Copenhagen 12th-13th April 2011, an agreement between the five agencies on the exchange of border data for crisis management was signed. The agreement covers data sets of topography, addresses and place names, with data covering a 100 km zone from the neighboring country's border.
Jan Terje Bjørke has passed away
Jan Terje Bjørke passed away 26th April 2011, only 63 years old. Jan Terje was a central person in the Norwegian geomatic society, especially within cartography. He has been a board member of GeoForum in Norway, and he got GI Norden's Award of honour in 2008.
GI Norden Conference 2011 in Turku, Finland
GI Norden, in cooperation with ProGIS, arranged its GI Norden Conference 2011 (the 23rd Nordic GIS Conference) in Turku, Finland, 8th - 9th June 2011. The title of the conference was "New Culture of Using GIS", bringing forth new methodology and new users of GIS.
Ralph Monö elected new president of GI Norden
Ralph Monö from ULI, Sweden was 7th June elected new president of GI Norden at the annual meeting of GI Norden in Turku. He is following Þorbjörg Kr. Kjartansdóttir, LISA, Iceland, who is continuing as a member of the board.

GI Norden and finnish ProGIS were arranging the 23rd Nordic GIS conference in Turku (Åbo), Finland, 8th-9th of June 2011. There were about 85 participants at the conference, which was arranged at the University of Turku. Turku was happy to present the best summer weather!
Nordic SDI Seminar in Uppsala, 3rd-4th October 2011
The Swedish GI organisation ULI and GI Norden (the Nordic umbrella organisation for geographic information), in cooperation with its European counterpart EUROGI, are organising a Nordic seminar on Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) 3rd-4th October, at GEOINFO 2011. GEOINFO is ULI´s annual conference which takes place 3rd-5th October in Uppsala. The conference fee will increase from 3rd September!
Norway in mourning
Friday 22nd of July 2011 Norway was hit by terror. 77 people were killed in Oslo and at Utøya. The people of Norway wants to thank you all for the support we have got since the terror hit us.
LISA´s 2011 User´s Conference - 20th October
The 2011 User´s Conference will be held at Grand Hotel Reykjavik, Iceland, on the 20th of October. Key note speaker is Steven Ramage, Executive Director, Marketing and Communications at the Open Geospatial Consortium.
New Statutes of GI Norden
At the board meeting in Turku 7th June 2011, changes in the statutes of GI Norden were approved. After that all the five members of GI Norden have accepted the changes.
